COURSES TAUGHT:

Computer Design Basics (Formerly Design for Non-designers)
A 15-week, 3-credit, entry level course geared to develop a sense of good design practices for professionals who are not primarily design oriented in their career path. Some of the major concepts that will be addressed are Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast, Color and Type. There will also be accompanying projects that apply those concepts. Furthermore, there will be an emphasis on software skills. All students will have experience using software packages (Adobe CC) to perform pixel image editing, vector image development, and print development. 9+ Classes
Introduction to Graphic Design
Students learn to create and evaluate graphic design through proper use and understanding of communication and design theory, idea generation and design techniques, terminology, and technology. Adobe CC computer applications are introduced with emphasis on idea generation, stages of design, and craftsmanship. Blackboard instructional technology is utilized. 28 Classes
Typographic Foundations (new course in 2015)
This entry-level course introduces students to basic design theories and skills for creating professional typographic works. Students create a variety of exercises to better understand design. Theoretical exercises, typography projects and readings introduce students to lifelong design issues and tasks. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects are utilized in this course. 7 Classes
Digital Imagery
Emphasis is placed on proper care and navigation of a Mac. Tests are administered to ensure proper understanding of the Mac platform, draw programs, and design principles. Projects explore Vector vs. Pixel illustration, Typography/Visual Literacy, and introduce students to their first client. 14 Classes
Type & Publication Design
Students are introduced to the power of InDesign CC. Style sheets, grids and proper construction of multipage documents are stressed through various projects including a recipe book, annual report, Theatre promotional series, brochures, and sport programs with a culminating project for a real world, not-for-profit client. Students also “translate” one project into an interactive book either through Adobe DPS or utilizing the Interative PDF settings. Students ultimately prepare their resume and portfolio in order to pursue an internship. 16 classes, 2 tutorials
Graphic Design History
An overview of the last 150 years of Western Graphic Design. The cyclical nature of design styles is examined. Theories of design are compared. In an effort to codify a student’s understanding of the outward appearance unique to a design movement, he or she constructs a series of labels in the style of various designers and movements. 8 classes, 3 tutorials
Computer Illustration Technologies
Students utilize the knowledge acquired from past courses as well as advanced techniques in Illustrator CC. From the resources provided, students may create illustrations for a book cover, a series of editorial illustrations, giftware ensembles, local businesses, playing cards, and portraiture. 14 Classes
Introduction to Web Design (last taught in 2007)
The application of good design on the web is the focus of this course. DreamWeaver is introduced after students work with HTML code. Information architecture is focused on as an aid to creating a well-structured site. 5 Classes
Corporate Identity & Branding
Students fully explore contemporary concepts in branding creating a flexible design system for a company of their creation. They then apply their acquired knowledge to a client of the Erie Small Business Development Center, working in small groups to create and pitch branding for local small businesses. 18 Classes
Magazine Design (Special Topics Course)
Editorial Design is introduced utilizing Adobe CC programs and “Editorial Design” book by Cath Caldwell and Yolanda Zappaterra. Upon the completion of this course students should be able to create a brand brief around a publication, design cover, contents, columns, and feature articles utilizing a grid and typographic style sheets. Additional students will learn about liquid layout and design for the ipad or interactive PDF. A successful student participant will leave with many successful designs for their portfolio and a firm understanding of editorial design. 2 Class, 1 Tutorial
Senior Annual (Yearbook) Last Taught in 2008
A seminar class that dealt with the student production of a 124 page book inclusive of Senior Portraits, sports teams, and the social events in the lives of seniors all constructed around a theme. The 1998 Senior Annual won a recognition in the prestigious Annual How Design awards. Many other editions won Student Addy Awards. 10 Classes
Individualized Studio
Ranging from Individual Senior Art Thesis development for a senior art show to the theoretical investigations of individual students in the area of Graphic Design and, most recently, 3-D printing and finally, the Lumen Poetry Chapbook Design.
Portfolio Development
Students refine and revise past projects, work on one team project, and create self-promotion items. Their refined portfolios have been reviewed at the Mosaic Career Fair in Washington DC, the Erie Ad Club Portfolio Review and both the Cleveland and the Pittsburgh AIGA Portfolio Reviews. Students must set a personal goal regarding their post-graduate life and investigate a city, geographic area, or graduate school options in order to start applying for employment.
